Alexander's Bridge, spanning the Chickahominy River east of Richmond, is the focus of this 1862 watercolor by McIlvaine, with the river's marshy lowlands spreading out on either side. The Chickahominy ran through swampy bottomland that shaped the Peninsula Campaign in the spring and early summer of 1862, when Union forces under George B. McClellan advanced toward Richmond and had to move men and wagons across its flooded crossings. Views of wetland crossings like this one record the terrain that determined where the fighting could happen, and the painting's quiet, waterlogged landscape shows why the river was so hard to cross.
