Sumner's Upper Bridge spanned the Chickahominy River, a slow, swampy stream east of Richmond that shaped much of the fighting in the Peninsula Campaign of 1862. Union forces under George McClellan advanced up the peninsula that spring, and the river's flooded bottomlands made every crossing a point of concern. Sumner's Upper Bridge carried troops across on the last day of May 1862, as they moved toward the fighting at Fair Oaks. The watercolor, dated 1862, offers a rare view of the crossing as it looked to a contemporary observer, when the war in Virginia was still unfolding.
