Seen from Mayo's Bridge, the James River runs past Richmond at the fall line, where the water drops over rapids on its way to the Chesapeake. The bridge was a toll crossing that linked the city with the Manchester bank across the river, and it carried travelers and farm goods into town during the early republic. Views like this one show how closely Richmond's commerce and mills depended on the river, whose current powered industry even as its rapids made navigation difficult above the falls.
