Seen from the James River, the city rises above the water, where the river's rapids at the fall line once set the pace of its growth. Richmond sits where the rocky Piedmont upland drops toward the coastal plain, and that drop powered the mills and factories that built the town's economy. From 1861 until its fall in April 1865, Richmond served as the capital of the Confederacy, and its riverfront industries, including the Tredegar Iron Works, supported the wartime effort.
