The rapids in this view sit near the fall line, where the Piedmont's rocky upland drops toward the coastal plain and the James River's steady current breaks into white water. That drop made Richmond a natural meeting point for travel and trade, since boats could go no farther upstream without portaging around the falls. Later canal builders, including those behind the James River and Kanawha Canal in the 1800s, worked to move goods past these same obstacles. The rapids remain a reminder of how the river's geography shaped the growth of the city.
