Upriver from the city, the James runs wide and fairly quiet before it reaches the rapids that define Richmond's location. The city sits on the fall line, where the river drops from the Piedmont plateau toward the coastal plain, and that drop powered mills and encouraged the canals and iron works that shaped the town's growth. Scenes like this one show the river as the reason a settlement took root here long before Richmond became the state capital. The riverbanks and the water's edge are worth a closer look for traces of the working landscape that grew up around the falls.
