The view looks down from the high ground above the Richmond waterworks onto the James River, where canal boats and river craft crowd the water below the city. Richmond sat at the falls of the James, which made it the head of navigation and a center for trade, and the canal works shown here reflect the effort of the 1830s to link the city's river traffic to inland markets. The print is an aquatint in color, engraved by W. J. Bennett after a painting by G. Cooke and published in New York by Lewis P. Clover around 1834. Its popularity lay in its careful rendering of a working river town at a time of rapid change.
