Libby Prison, a former tobacco warehouse and ship-supply building on Cary Street in Richmond, held captured Union officers from 1862 until the end of the war. This lithograph was drawn from life by W.C. Schwartzburg, a soldier in Company A of the 24th Wisconsin Volunteers, and printed in color by E. Sachse & Co. of Baltimore. It was published around 1865 by J.L. Baldwin, a member of Company B of the 58th Indiana Veterans Volunteers, and was issued as No. 26 in its series. Its origin among soldiers who had seen the prison firsthand makes it a useful record of how Northern readers pictured Confederate captivity.
