From the south side of the canal basin, this April 1865 view takes in the State Capitol and the Custom House just after Confederate forces abandoned Richmond. Fires set during the evacuation and the Union occupation that followed left much of the riverfront in ruins, and the record's subject headings point to the damage, including cannonballs. Thomas Jefferson designed the Capitol, which still stands above the wreckage and makes the contrast worth studying. The print was made from a glass negative and printed later.
