Richmond sits on the falls of the James River, and that geography shaped nearly everything about the city's history, from its colonial trading post to its role as Virginia's capital and, during the Civil War, the seat of the Confederate government. A scenic view of the city was a popular subject for printmakers and postcard publishers in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when railroads and steamboats brought visitors to Virginia's river towns. Images like this one captured the mix of church spires, commercial buildings, and river bluffs that gave Richmond its distinctive profile.
