This bird's-eye view shows Fortress Monroe at Old Point Comfort, Virginia, together with the Hygeia Hotel beside it, and its title, "The key to the South," reflects the fort's strategic role. Fortress Monroe guarded the entrance to Hampton Roads and Chesapeake Bay, and it remained in Union hands throughout the Civil War, becoming an important base for Northern forces on the Virginia Peninsula. The lithograph was drawn and printed by E. Sachse & Co. and published in Washington by C. Bohn in 1862, so it reflects the wartime interest in a place that had become a symbol of Union control in the Tidewater region.
