Fought along Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862, the battle remains the bloodiest single day in American military history. This color lithograph's title names Gen. George B. McClellan, commander of the Army of the Potomac, whose forces clashed with Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in a battle that ended in a tactical stalemate. Chicago firm Kurz & Allison issued the print in 1888, when popular battle pictures were in high demand among veterans and a public keen to remember the Civil War a generation later.
