This pencil drawing shows Union troops under Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks entering Front Royal, a small town at the junction of the North and South Forks of the Shenandoah River in northern Virginia. Its record is dated May 20, 1862, during the Valley Campaign, when Banks's army was moving up the valley in pursuit of Stonewall Jackson's Confederate forces. Front Royal changed hands several times that spring, so the drawing captures a moment when the town's control was shifting. Because it is a sketch made in the field rather than a photograph, it shows the movement and bearing of the troops as the artist saw them.
