Drawn in pencil and dated July 20, 1862, this sketch shows Winchester, Virginia, as seen from a fort on the hill northeast of town, with a breastwork in the foreground. Winchester changed hands many times during the Civil War, and its position at the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley made it a strategic prize for both armies. Fortifications like the one pictured were built on the surrounding heights to guard the approaches to the town. The drawing is part of a Civil War drawing collection that J.P. Morgan gave to the Library of Congress in 1919, and it gives a close look at how soldiers recorded the ground they occupied.
