Haystacks dot the fields of this valley farm, with the mountains rising blue behind them under an open sky, a scene typical of the rural country that lines the Skyline Drive corridor in Virginia. The drive, built along the crest of the Blue Ridge in the 1930s, was planned to show travelers the pastoral Shenandoah and Virginia countryside below, and farms like this one were part of the landscape the parkway was meant to frame. Hay stacked in the open fields was a common sight in the region before mechanized baling became widespread, so the picture records a working agricultural life that the scenic road was designed to look down upon.
