Haystacks stand in a mountain valley field, with a horse-drawn wagon working among them, a scene that reflects the farming life carried on in the hollows and valleys along the Blue Ridge long before Skyline Drive was built. Hay was cut, cured and hauled by hand and animal power well into the twentieth century, so a picture like this records a working landscape rather than a wilderness view. Skyline Drive, which runs along the crest of the Blue Ridge in Virginia, was developed in the 1930s partly by removing and relocating many of the families who had farmed these slopes, which gives scenes of rural labor like this one added historical weight.
