Looking out over a forested mountain valley with patches of farmland, this view belongs to the Skyline Drive corridor that runs along the crest of the Blue Ridge in Virginia. The road was built in the 1930s as part of Shenandoah National Park, and its overlooks were designed to frame the rolling ridgelines and the pastures tucked into the hollows below. Many of those valley farms were cleared by families who were later relocated when the park was established, so the open fields in a scene like this often reflect a landscape shaped by both farming and conservation. The mix of dark forest and cleared land is a good window into how the Blue Ridge looked in the decades before the park took its present form.
