Skyline Drive, the ridge road that runs along the crest of Shenandoah National Park, is the setting here, and the view is taken from one of its overlooks above a long, forested valley. The winding roads below suggest how the land was once cut by farm lanes and later by modern highways. The park was established in the 1930s, when the federal government acquired hundreds of mountain farms and the Civilian Conservation Corps helped build the drive as a scenic route. Visitors looking at this scene can still see the mix of dense hardwood forest and open ridgeline that the park was created to protect.
