Ridges rolling away in layers of color, with farmland tucked into the valley floor, make this view a classic Skyline Drive scene in autumn. The road was built along the crest of the Blue Ridge in the 1930s, when the Civilian Conservation Corps and other New Deal crews worked to shape the park's scenic overlooks and trails. Many of the views it opens onto were once working landscapes of small farms and orchards, cleared before the national park was created and later reclaimed by forest. Autumn brings out the hardwood canopy, turning the slopes into bands of red, orange and gold that draw visitors back each year.
