Forested ridgelines rise above a patchwork of farm fields in this view, a scene that Skyline Drive was built to frame for motorists in the Blue Ridge. The road was developed in the 1930s as part of a federal effort to create a scenic parkway along the crest of the mountains, and it was later folded into Shenandoah National Park when that park was established in 1935. Many of the valleys below were farmland that families had worked for generations before the land was acquired for the park, so the contrast between cultivated fields and the wooded slopes above tells part of the region's story.
