Hazy ridgelines roll away in layers from a bare hillside, a view typical of the Blue Ridge stretch of Skyline Drive in Virginia. The road was built in the 1930s along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and it was designed to give motorists long views like this one across the Shenandoah Valley to the west and the Piedmont to the east. The bluish haze that softens the far ridges is a well-known feature of the region, often attributed to moisture and natural plant oils in the forest air. Scenes like this helped draw visitors to the park when it was established as Shenandoah National Park.
