Set along the ridgeline of Skyline Drive in Virginia, this view opens onto a broad valley framed by a leafless tree in the foreground and a split-rail fence that runs out toward the edge of the overlook. A few horses graze in the open meadow below, a reminder that grazing and pasture land once stretched across many of the high clearings along the Blue Ridge before the parkway was built. Skyline Drive was developed in the 1930s as a scenic road through Shenandoah National Park, and scenes like this one, with rural working land visible from the ridge, capture the mix of farming and mountain landscape that the park later replaced.
