Few of the Skyline Drive views on this board include a horse, which makes this scene stand out: a single grazing animal in an open meadow with the forested ridge rising behind it. Skyline Drive runs for about 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge in northern and central Virginia, and the landscape along it was shaped by generations of farming, grazing and logging before the park was created in the 1930s. The Blue Ridge hollows and pastures were cleared and worked long before the Civilian Conservation Corps and park planners turned the ridgeline into a scenic route. Pictures like this one capture the older rural land use that survives in the park's meadows.
