Seen from above, this view of farmland shows a patchwork of fields divided by fencelines, with a cluster of farm buildings and narrow country roads running between them. Skyline Drive, the ridgetop road that this picture is filed under, runs along the crest of the Blue Ridge in northern Virginia, and the valleys below it were largely worked by farm families for generations. Aerial photography of rural land like this became common in the twentieth century and is useful for seeing how roads, property lines and farm layouts shaped the countryside. Notice how the buildings sit close together near the roads, a pattern that reflects access to the road network and the work of running a working farm.
