Few pictures in this set show the working side of the land so plainly: a farm slope with split-rail fences running across it and one seated figure resting in the open ground. The record gives no photographer, date, or farm name, so the scene can only be read from what is visible. Along the Virginia ridges that later became Skyline Drive, many hillside farms were worked by families who cleared timber, grazed stock, and fenced fields by hand. Pictures like this one are useful because they record how those slopes were divided and used before the land was set aside for the parkway.
