Pairing the Union commander, Gen. Irvin McDowell, with the Confederate, Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard, in its title sets this color lithograph apart from other battle scenes. The fighting took place on July 21, 1861, near Manassas Junction in Virginia, and it was the first major clash of the Civil War. Union troops ended the day in retreat toward Washington. Chicago firm Kurz & Allison issued the print around 1889 or 1890, nearly three decades after the battle, when popular demand for colorful Civil War scenes was strong.
