Philip Kearny, the one-armed Union general who lost his left arm in the Mexican War, is shown leading a charge at Chantilly, Virginia, on September 1, 1862. Kearny was killed that same day after riding unknowingly into Confederate lines, a death that made him a lasting symbol of fearless leadership in the North. The color lithograph, after an original sketch by Tholey, was issued by Philadelphia publisher John Smith around 1867, and its title uses the variant spelling "Kearney.
