This plan maps the ground at Kernstown, a village south of Winchester, Virginia, where Stonewall Jackson's Confederate troops fought Union forces on March 23, 1862. Union troops under Nathan Kimball held the field, and Jackson withdrew, but the battle had larger effects. Fearing another Confederate move in the Valley, Washington kept troops there that might otherwise have joined the campaign against Richmond. Maps like this one show troop positions and terrain, so readers can trace how the fighting moved across the fields and roads.
