The Powhatan brand label pairs a tobacco name borrowed from a Virginia chief with the figures of Pocahontas and John Smith, rendered in this color chromolithograph printed in New York around 1860 by Sarony, Major & Knapp. Jamestown's settlers had turned to tobacco as a cash crop by the 1610s, and the story of Smith and Pocahontas, retold widely in the nineteenth century, gave the product a romantic link to the colony's origins. The imagery was meant to sell a commodity by evoking the Virginia frontier.
