Robert E. Lee died at Lexington, Virginia, on October 12, 1870, and this lithograph, published that year by the New York firm Currier & Ives, was one of the memorial prints issued to mark his death. The title gives his exact age, 62 years, 8 months and 6 days, a detail typical of nineteenth-century mourning pictures. After the Civil War, Lee became president of Washington College in Lexington, and the town is where he spent his last years. Currier & Ives sold many inexpensive lithographs like this one, which spread his image widely among readers across the country.
