Rather than a city or battlefield, this hand-colored lithograph takes the Shenandoah Valley itself as its subject, a long stretch of farmland in Virginia known for its rich soil and mills. Currier & Ives issued it around 1864, when the valley had become a contested war zone, and it was drawn by Frances F. Palmer, one of the firm's leading landscape designers. Later that year, Union forces under Philip Sheridan swept through the valley and destroyed crops and mills, so the pastoral scene carries a poignancy its first viewers may have felt.
