A Civil War melodrama set in the Shenandoah Valley gives this poster its name and its subject. The play, written by Bartley Campbell and first staged in 1888, was revived by touring companies for years afterward. This lithograph, printed around 1898 by the Strobridge Lithograph Company of Cincinnati and New York, carries the caption "Col. West," and the record also names Jacob Litt. The subject headings for military personnel, prisoners, and pointing hands suggest the production leaned on wartime loyalty and conflict, the staples of stage melodrama at the time.
