A theatrical poster for the melodrama *Shenandoah* leads with a caption that reads like a line from the stage: "How did that portrait come in your possession?" The play, by Bronson Howard, is set in the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War and follows Union and Confederate soldiers and the prisoners caught between them. Its lithograph was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company in 1898, when touring dramas like this one were advertised with large, colorful sheets pasted on walls and billboards across the country.
