Few drawings from the Civil War were made on olive-tinted paper, and this small sheet, roughly the size of a postcard, shows the Shenandoah Valley in September 1864 through soldiers on the move. The record lists it as a pencil, Chinese white, and black ink wash drawing, a technique that let an artist capture troop movements quickly in the field. September 1864 was a turning point in the Valley, when Union forces under Philip Sheridan pushed Confederate troops southward and laid waste to farms and mills along the way. Sketches like this one, made close to the action, remain among the most direct records of how the campaign looked to those who fought in it.
