Perched above the Potomac across from Harpers Ferry, Maryland Heights gave whoever held it a commanding view down the Shenandoah Valley, and this 1864 drawing captures that vantage in wartime. Worked in pencil and Chinese white on pale green paper, it reads as a quick field study rather than a finished landscape. The camps it shows resemble the Union encampments that filled the heights during the valley campaigns of 1864, when the corridor changed hands again and again. Its long, narrow format suits the broad sweep of ground that officers and topographical draftsmen needed to record.
