The foreground of this c1906 view is taken up by the Mansion Inn, a hotel that would have housed the visitors drawn to Luray in the Shenandoah Valley. Luray's reputation as a destination grew from the nearby Luray Caverns, which were discovered in 1878 and opened to tourists soon after, so hotels like this one catered to travelers arriving by rail and carriage. The photograph was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why a print of it survives in the Library of Congress collection. It shows how a small Virginia town's main street looked in the years before automobiles became common.
