Aerial photographs of small Virginia towns from around 1906 are uncommon, and this view of Luray, the seat of Page County in the Shenandoah Valley, records its streets and buildings from an elevated position. Photographers of the period usually relied on hills, tall structures, balloons, or kites to get such overhead views, so the picture is a useful record of how a rural county seat was laid out in the early twentieth century. Luray was also known for the Luray Caverns, discovered in 1878, which were already drawing visitors and helped put the town on the map. The print was submitted for U.S. copyright registration, which is how such images were often preserved.
