Among the many views of Luray Cave in Page County, Virginia, this wood engraving singles out the Organ, a group of stone formations that produces musical tones when struck. The cave had only recently opened to paying visitors when the view appeared in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on December 27, 1879, at a time when illustrated weeklies relied on wood engravings to reproduce scenes like this one. The caption card also lists photography and flash among its subjects, which points to the use of magnesium light to show caverns that were otherwise too dark to depict well.
