Luray Caverns, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, is the setting here, and the title points to the early practice of lighting the cave's chambers for visitors. The Luray cavern was discovered in 1878 by local men, and it opened to the public soon after, becoming one of the first commercial caves in the eastern United States. Stereo and view cards like this one helped spread its fame, showing the dripping columns and calcite formations to people who would never make the trip. The cave's formations, such as its stalactites and the "Great Stalacpipe Organ," have drawn visitors ever since.
