Robert E. Lee stands at the grave of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson in Lexington, Virginia, in this lithograph dated about 1869. Jackson, Lee's most trusted corps commander, died in May 1863 after being wounded by his own troops at Chancellorsville, and he was buried in Lexington. Lee was then president of Washington College in the same town, so the visit reflects the close tie between the two men and the place. The print was made in the years after the war, when such images of Confederate leaders helped shape how the South remembered its generals.
