Mount Vernon, on the Potomac River in Virginia, is the estate George Washington inherited in 1754 and spent much of his life building up into a working plantation and family home. The picture takes its name from that home, which Washington expanded over the decades into the white-columned mansion now known across the country. Images like this one were popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Americans increasingly looked to Washington's domestic life at Mount Vernon as a symbol of national character. Worth noticing is how the house is presented as a place of family and retirement rather than as a battlefield or seat of government.
