This lithograph shows Mount Vernon from an elevated, bird's-eye vantage, laying out the mansion, grounds, and outbuildings on the Potomac in a single view. It was published around 1859, a period when the estate drew wide public attention. The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association had bought the property in 1858 to save it from decay, and interest in Washington's home was growing. The hand coloring gives the scene a bright, decorative quality, and the map-like view was typical of mid-century prints meant to show a place's features at a glance.
