Washington appears here not on a battlefield but in a domestic setting, in a color print made around 1911 from a painting by E. Percy Moran. Moran specialized in colonial-era genre scenes that were widely reproduced in the early 1910s, and this print belongs to a popular body of images showing the first president in family life. The catalog record ties the scene to the Washington family of the 1780s and 1790s, when Washington lived at Mount Vernon in Virginia. Its photomechanical process made the painting affordable for homes and schools, which says much about how Americans of that era wanted to picture their founder.
