Mount Vernon, the Potomac River estate George Washington built up over his lifetime, is the setting for this hand-colored lithograph published by Currier & Ives. The firm's print shop in New York turned out large numbers of sentimental and patriotic views like this one during the middle decades of the nineteenth century, when Washington's home had become a shrine. The estate had passed to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association in 1858, and the growing public interest in preserving it helps explain why such scenes sold so well. Looking closely, the viewer sees the house as a symbol of national memory rather than as a working plantation.
