The tomb in this print is the family burial vault on the grounds of Mount Vernon, the Potomac-side estate George Washington managed for most of his adult life. Washington died there in December 1799 and was laid in a brick vault on a slope above the river, a spot he had chosen himself in his will. The vault stood in disrepair for decades, and the estate's condition became a matter of national concern, which helped set the stage for the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association to take over the property in 1858. Currier & Ives, the New York firm famous for hand-colored lithographs of American scenes, issued many views of Washington's home and grave, and this one would have appealed to a public eager to see the shrine.
