The Natural Bridge, a limestone arch spanning Cedar Creek in Rockbridge County, is the feature this view centers on, with the surrounding gorge and woods filling the rest of the frame. Thomas Jefferson owned the land around the bridge and described it at length in his *Notes on the State of Virginia* (1785), calling it one of the wonders of the natural world. By the nineteenth century the site had become one of the most visited scenic spots in the Shenandoah region, drawing travelers, painters and early tourists who came to see the great span and the deep ravine beneath it.
