Few natural landmarks in Virginia drew as many nineteenth-century visitors as the Natural Bridge, a limestone arch over Cedar Creek in Rockbridge County that rises roughly 215 feet above the water. Thomas Jefferson, who owned the surrounding land for a time, described the formation in his *Notes on the State of Virginia*, and it became a staple of travel writing that followed. Harry Fenn, an English-born illustrator working in America, made the engravings for this view, and his scenic drawings helped introduce places like this one to readers of illustrated books and magazines.
