Alexander's Bridge spanned the Chickahominy River, a slow, swampy stream east of Richmond, and this 1862 watercolor records one of its crossings during the Civil War. In 1862, the river lay across the path of the Union army's Peninsula Campaign, and control of its bridges and fords mattered to both sides as troops moved toward the Confederate capital. Artists working in the field often recorded such sites as terrain, since the ground, water and makeshift crossings shaped how armies marched and fought. The painting's quiet, ordinary scene is a reminder of how much of the war was fought over waterways like this one.
