Lightning splits the sky over the Chickahominy Swamp in this 1862 watercolor, a view of the slow, tangled river bottoms east of Richmond, Virginia. The work is part of the Marian S. Carson collection at the Library of Congress, and its date places it in the middle of the Civil War. That spring and summer, Union forces under George B. McClellan fought and camped across these flooded lowlands during the Peninsula Campaign, where the swamp's mud and standing water slowed troop movements and wore down soldiers. Storm scenes like this one show how much weather and terrain shaped those campaigns.
