A gasoline plow and a gasoline road machine work side by side on land that has just been reclaimed from prairie, a pairing that shows the new machinery at work on open ground. Around 1912, gasoline engines were beginning to replace teams of horses and mules for breaking sod, which allowed farmers to open up large tracts much faster. H. J. Harvey registered the photograph for copyright in August 1912, and its wide, narrow format fits the flat landscape it records.
